Grazing...

I. Grazed. All. Day.

I feel like I was more mentally hungry than physically hungry all day, therefore, most of my meals were more of a snack.  I think I was also a little dehydrated and was confusing my hunger with thirst during some times.  I'm telling you, listen to your body!

Breakfast (6am) Wild salmon tossed in some sauteed vegetables with 1/4 avocado

Taught a pilates+weights class and ran 2 miles

My version of cereal, paleo style (9:30am):  1 cup coconut milk, 1 tbsp chia seeds, 1 tbsp red walnuts, 1 tbsp cocoa nibs, strawberries, cinnamon and 1 tbsp dry coconut flakes.  I let the cereal sit in the fridge for a half hour and it gelled up from the chia seeds into a slight pudding consistency.

1:30 pm: 1/4 red pepper, 2 onion rings, 2 asparagus spears, 1 slice of yellow squash, and 2 very small slices of bacon

4 pm: I had two pieces of apple with almond butter on top and coconut

7:30pm Un-pictured:  2 large slices of ham, 1/4 avocado and 2 handfuls of pistachios.

Feeling a little too satisfied.  Filling up my water glass and the kitchen is closed!  Goodnight all... have a great saturday night!

A Day in My Paleo Eats

Hola, Amigos ;)

I have been getting very good feedback about this little blog and I am glad it is helping you make better food choices or at least make you think.  If you have any suggestions or comments, please let me know because this is for you.  If you want me to write about anything specific... your wish is my command!

Okay, I have really been buckling down on my paleo nutrition because my allergies are out of control with every flower blooming and my asthma is acting up a bit.  Eating paleo (or like a caveman) is nothing new to all you BAWS members.  Eat plants, lean meats, healthy fats, some fruits, and little starch.  No sugar/no dairy/no grains.  The reason why I am really starting to get hooked on this is because it helps me feel better, cleaner and my allergy flare ups are slim to none.  Multiple people have expressed they like to see what I eat in one day.  Well, here you go... paleo style :)

Breakfast was a big smoothie (after a 40 minute cardio workout watching none other but THE wedding):  1/2 banana, 1 cup coconut milk, whooping handful of spinach, splash of vanilla extract, 1 tbsp almond butter.  Sprinkled chia seeds and cocoa nibs on top.  7am

(taught a pilates class at 9:45am)

I knew I would be eating lunch later today so I packed an egg for a snack around 11:30am.  I swear that egg is not moldy if you see some green... that is an easter egg!  Eh, some dye won't kill you.

Lunch around 1:30pm was a salmon burger (Whole Foods and only 3 ingredients) with some steamed broccoli and mini bell peppers (they're cute)

I made this one up... I think.... and I am blown away by how darn good it is!  Only two ingredients, but its a party in your mouth!  I needed a pick me up around 4:30pm.  Like my lunch, I know I would consume dinner a little later tonight.  Two thin slices of a granny smith apple and 3 crispy pieces of organic bacon.  Wow!  So simple, but so so good.  (150 calories) I only ate one.

Tonight (around 8pm) I will have a piece of grilled chicken with avocado slices and cherry tomatoes on the side.
This day (with dinner) is around 1500 calories for those of you who are watching their numbers.  I do not watch while I am on the paleo diet because I feel your body should tell you when you are hungry, when you are full, when you are tired and when you should get up and exercise.  Listen to what your body is telling you!  And you will naturally fall into a healthy pattern.  Paleo is the way to go... try it out.

Last Food Rules Challenge Topics

Hey, there!

Last night I held the last Food Rules Challenge Session.  I applaud all of you who have stuck to it and are planning to make this your lifestyle!  Even if you have not made all of the changes, at least you made some and are on your way to a healthier you.  Remember, little changes add up!  Last night, I covered supplements, healthy snacks and emotional eating.  My computer and printer were not communicating and I was not able to print the papers for you like I did with the previous weeks.  I apologize, but here is the information.

I know many of you said that you would like to leave comments on this blog or become a follower, but you are not a member of gmail.  No worries, you can simply write comments on BAWS Facebook page or directly email me if you have question.  julie@BrynAthynWorkoutStudio.com

Without further ado here are the topics:

BAWS FRC 3

1.  SUPPLEMENTS
A.  FISH OIL AND CHIA SEEDS-
Dietary sources of omega-3 fatty acids include fish oil and certain plant/nut oils. Fish oil contains both docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), while some nuts (English walnuts) and vegetable oils (canola, soybean, flaxseed/linseed, olive) contain alpha-linolenic acid (ALA).  There is evidence from multiple studies supporting intake of recommended amounts of DHA and EPA in the form of dietary fish or fish oil supplements lowers triglycerides, reduces the risk of  heart attacks, dangerous abnormal heart rhythms, and strokes in people with known cardiovascular disease, slows the buildup of atherosclerotic plaques ("hardening of the arteries"), and lowers blood pressure. However, high doses may have harmful effects, such as an increased risk of bleeding.
Fish oil can help:
Rheumatoid arthritis
Multiple randomized controlled trials report improvements in morning stiffness and joint tenderness with the regular intake of fish oil supplements for up to three months. Benefits have been reported as additive with anti-inflammatory medications such as NSAIDs (like ibuprofen or aspirin).

High blood pressure
Multiple human trials report small reductions in blood pressure with intake of omega-3 fatty acid. However, high intakes of omega-3 fatty acids per day may be necessary to obtain clinically relevant effects, and at this dose level, there is an increased risk of bleeding. Therefore, a qualified healthcare provider should be consulted prior to starting treatment with supplements.

Hypertriglyceridemia (fish oil / EPA plus DHA)
Primary cardiovascular disease prevention (fish intake)
Cancer prevention
Several population (epidemiologic) studies report that dietary omega-3 fatty acids or fish oil may reduce the risk of developing breast, colon, or prostate cancer.

Chia Seeds

Chia is an edible seed that comes from the desert plant Salvia hispanica, a member of the mint family that grows abundantly in southern Mexico. You may have seen chia sprouts growing on the novelty planters called Chia Pets, but historically, the seeds have been the most important part of the plant. In pre-Columbian times they were a main component of the Aztec and Mayan diets and were the basic survival ration of Aztec warriors. I've read that one tablespoon was believed to sustain an individual for 24 hours. The Aztecs also used chia medicinally to stimulate saliva flow and to relieve joint pain and sore skin.
Chia is very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, even more so than flax seeds. And it has another advantage over flax: chia is so rich in antioxidants that the seeds don't deteriorate and can be stored for long periods without becoming rancid. And, unlike flax, they do not have to be ground to make their nutrients available to the body. Chia seeds also provide fiber (25 grams give you 6.9 grams of fiber) as well as calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, copper, iron, molybdenum, niacin, and zinc.

Another advantage: when added to water and allowed to sit for 30 minutes, chia forms a gel. Researchers suggest that this reaction also takes place in the stomach, slowing the process by which digestive enzymes break down carbohydrates and convert them into sugar.

B.  DAILY MULTIVITAMIN

In particular, there is a growing awareness of the benefits of health supplements for both young and old.

To scientists, and health conscious people, the fact that we can benefit from supplements has never been in doubt. Yet, many of us are not quite clear what exactly the benefits of taking a daily multivitamin are. Not only do most of us fail to eat a varied and well-balanced diet on a regular basis, at certain times in their lives, many people may require more of certain nutrients than their diets can provide - for example, young children, teenagers, pregnant women, those on vegetarian or poorly designed slimming diets, and chronically ill or elderly people. Furthermore, there are also some nutrients that may be difficult to get in food in adequate amounts and therefore may need to be taken as a supplement by certain people, for example, folic acid for women during pre-conception and in the first three months of pregnancy.

In general, a good daily multivitamin/mineral supplement improves your overall bodily functioning and boosts both your physical and mental health and well-being. Sometimes supplementation with specific nutrients may be more appropriate in order to address any individual specific needs. For example:
Fat soluble vitamins are stored in the body… Water soluble vitamins are not kept in the body and are released in your urine.  It is important to get these on a daily bases.
CoQ10 is especially helpful for those at risk for heart disease
Vitamins C and E, taken in combination to help ward off Alzheimer's disease.
Vitamin E, for example, a fat-soluble antioxidant vitamin helps to neutralize potentially damaging free radicals in the body and it is particularly important for the protection of cell membranes as well as maintaining healthy skin, heart and circulation, nerves, muscles and red blood cells.
Vitamin C on the other hand is water soluble, but like Vitamin E, it is an antioxidant. It helps white blood cells combat infection, is essential for wound healing, for the formation of collagen, for healthy skin, and for the formation of other important structural materials in bones, teeth and capillaries. It also helps with the absorption of iron from plant sources.
Vitamins D, K, A, and other nutrients in a multivitamin supplement all have specific beneficial effects on our bodies ranging from minimizing the risks of heart problems to helping to ward off multiple diseases.  Vitamin D is in very few foods, but you can absorb it in your skin by being in the sun.  It is important because it promotes calcium absorption, cell growth and reduces inflammation.
A multivitamin supplement usually contains the recommended daily dose of a variety of vitamins and other nutrients. Sometimes, multivitamin supplements are formulated for specific age groups, or individual conditions such as pregnancy. Multivitamins also are at their most efficient when they are in liquid form, as the body has been proven to absorb them five times more efficiently than multivitamins in pill form.

Many people report a feeling of general well being when they are taking their daily multivitamins regularly. The individual vitamins and nutrients in a quality daily multivitamin dose delivers to you their specific benefits of each individual vitamin, plus you get the combined (synergistic) benefits of all of the ingredients working together.

It is important to take your daily multivitamin in a liquid form regularly to enjoy these benefits to their fullest extent. Vigorous training, for example, increases the production of free radicals in the body. When involved in an exercise program, we should, therefore, increase the intake of antioxidants such as beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E, and ensure you take adequate amounts of the proper vitamins and minerals required to maintain strong, healthy bones and joints such as calcium and iron. Also, older people over 55 years, convalescents, those who consume large amounts of alcohol, those with active, busy lives, people with colds, smokers, those exposed to excessive pollution, athletes and routine aspirin users need to take more daily and regular multivitamins.
C. PROBIOTICS
Probiotics are bacteria that help maintain the natural balance of organisms (microflora) in the intestines . The normal human digestive tract contains about 400 types of probiotic bacteria that reduce the growth of harmful bacteria and promote a healthy digestive system. The largest group of probiotic bacteria in the intestine is lactic acid bacteria, of which Lactobacillus acidophilus, found in yogurt, is the best known. Yeast is also a probiotic substance. Probiotics are also available as dietary supplements.
It has been suggested that probiotics be used to treat problems in the stomach and intestines. But only certain types of bacteria or yeast (called strains) have been shown to work in the digestive tract.
In most circumstances, people use probiotics to prevent diarrhea caused by antibiotics. Antibiotics kill "good" (beneficial) bacteria along with the bacteria that cause illness. A decrease in beneficial bacteria may lead to diarrhea, candida and other problems. Taking probiotic supplements (as capsules, powder, or liquid extract) may help replace the lost beneficial bacteria and thus help prevent illness.
A decrease in beneficial bacteria may also lead to other infections, such as vaginal yeast and urinary tract infections, and symptoms such as diarrhea from intestinal illnesses.
Research has shown that certain probiotics may restore normal bowel function and may help reduce:1
Diarrhea that is a side effect of antibiotics.
            Certain types of infectious diarrhea.
Inflammation of the ileal pouch (pouchitis) that may occur in people who have had surgery to remove the colon.
These results suggest that eventually probiotics may also be used to:
Help with other causes of diarrhea.
Help prevent infections in the digestive tract.
Help control immune response (inflammation), as in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Researchers are studying the use of probiotics for inflammatory bowel disease, colon cancer, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

2.  HEALTHY SNACKS:
Snacking isn’t “bad” if you do it in moderation and make healthy choices.  Healthy, good-for-you snacks can be a part of a healthy diet – which you need to do to live healthfully.
Snacks should be between 100-300 calories depending on your expended energy for the day and how many meals you are eating.
To snack the sensible way, choose nutrient-rich snacks like those listed below:
- 4-6 oz of yogurt with a handful of berries and 1 oz of nuts
- Yogurt with a handful of grapes and 1 stalk of celery chopped
- 2 healthy choice turkey roll ups w/ a handful of trail mix
- Veggies and 2 tbsp of hummus
- Green Monster (smoothie/protein shake)
- 3 goat cheese and nut stuffed dates
- ¾ cup edamame and sea salt
- 1 apple and 1 tbsp almond butter
- Protein Nut Butter Truffles
- Celery and 1 tbsp almond butter with raisins
- ¼ avocado/tomoato/cucumber/red onion/and basalmic salad
- 1 oz swiss cheese and a pear
-1/2 cup cottage cheese and pineapple slices
3.  EMOTIONAL EATING:

There are several differences between emotional hunger and physical hunger, according to the University of Texas Counseling and Mental Health Center web site:
1. Emotional hunger comes on suddenly; physical hunger occurs gradually.
2. When you are eating to fill a void that isn't related to an empty stomach, you crave a specific food, such as pizza or ice cream, and only that food will meet your need. When you eat because you are actually hungry, you're open to options.
3. Emotional hunger feels like it needs to be satisfied instantly with the food you crave; physical hunger can wait.
4. Even when you are full, if you're eating to satisfy an emotional need, you're more likely to keep eating. When you're eating because you're hungry, you're more likely to stop when you're full.
5. Emotional eating can leave behind feelings of guilt; eating when you are physically hungry does not.

Pan Fried Coconut Chicken

Afternoon'!  Hope this muggy/rainy weather isn't bringing your mood down.  I'm not letting it affect me... I was just in the kitchen making an awesome batch of pan fried coconut chicken.  Lip smackin' good ;)  But first... my breakfast.

2 scrambled eggs with a cup of fresh chopped veggies sauteed in light olive oil

Now, the chicken...
I chose to cook with dark meat today... a rare thing, but that's what I was feeling.
-Chicken Thighs, tossed in 2 egg yolks, rolled in coconut flour (whole foods), and pan fried in coconut oil.  *Before you pan fry in coconut oil and after you put the flour on, you can also roll the chicken in unsweetened coconut.  I would have done this, but I only had sweetened coconut and did not want the extra sugar.*

The result is a tender, juicy, slightly sweet piece of chicken.

I paired my serving of poultry with fresh zucchini, a purple onion ring, and a portobello mushroom

Yes, this dish is a little heavy on the healthy fats, but if you are watching your carbohydrate intake and sugars, you will be golden.
This dish is meant to be made... try it out :)

Squats and Baba Ganoush..

Hey, friends!  What a random title huh?  Well, I want you to take a look at this squat.  It's a decent one if you ask me.  The depth of the squat will come with practice because she needs to build her flexibility, but her form is awesome!  Weight in the heels, toes slightly turned out, core tight, shoulders back, chest out and head is neutral.  Way to go, Mom!  The more and more you practice your squats, you will get better at them and your whole body will start to transform.  You will become stronger and your booty will look nicer ;)

Now, onto the food.  Delish...
Baba Ganoush BAWS style.

Ingredients

  • 1 large eggplant (about 1 pound)
  • 1 glove garlic, minced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh flat-leaf parsley, plus more for garnish
  • 2 tablespoons tahini
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • *some recipes add in olives... I love them, so I tossed in a generous handful and omitted the salt (that's why it looks rather dark)

Directions

Preheat oven to 450 degrees F.
Prick eggplant with a fork and place on a cookie sheet lined with foil. Bake the eggplant until it is soft inside, about 20 minutes. Alternatively, grill the eggplant over a gas grill, rotating it around until the skin is completely charred, about 10 minutes. Let the eggplant cool. Cut the eggplant in half lengthwise, drain off the liquid, and scoop the pulp into a food processor. Process the eggplant until smooth and transfer to a medium bowl.
On a cutting board, work garlic and 1/4 teaspoon salt together with the flat side of a knife, until it forms a paste. Add the garlic-salt mixture to the eggplant. Stir in the parsley, tahini, and lemon juice. Season with more salt, to taste. Garnish with additional parsley

We have another gorgeous day... yes!  I hope you all make the best of it.

I wanted to show you what my bags look like when I leave the food store every week.  Kris Carr said it best in her book Crazy, Sexy Diet... "Whole Foods is my pharmacy."  She has stage IV cancer and has completely prevented it from spreading because she drastically changed her diet from the Standard American Diet to a healthy vegetable based one.  She is one of my role models.
I obviously agree with her.  I believe 90% of the time you can heal yourself from any injury, disease, stress, etc from a nice clean diet and some exercise.  I shop at either Whole Foods or Fresh Market because truthfully, I love the environment in both places, they help out the community and I like how fresh all their produce and meats are.

Let's take a look at my goods.  (Eggs, free range chicken and turkey are already in my fridge...didn't need to buy them.)

Vanilla protein powder packet, Almond milk, pre cut veggies, tomato garden vegetable soup, baby eggplant, greek yogurt (0% and 2%), baby spinach, strawberries, coconut water and....
because my sweet tooth gets in the way sometimes and I wanted some cheese, but try not to have too much dairy, I got 2 dark chocolate truffles and an individual pack of cheddar cheese.
Tip-  Don't go shopping hungry.  You will buy unnecessary things.

Remember BAWS's pyramid...  Eat mostly Veggies, lean meats and eggs, healthy fats, some fruits, little starch, little dairy and no sugar.  (I find it hard to completely cut out sugar so I do treat myself now and then)

My meals thus far for the day until dinnah.

Greek yogurt, coconut, strawberries and cocoa nibs

Garden vegetable soup and a chicken thigh

Vanilla Cinnamon Banana Smoothie

I hope taking a look at my food bags have helped you for your next trip to the store.  You don't have to mirror me because we may have different tastes, but just remember to fill up on lots of colorful foods.  No beige ;)

If you are cooking for Easter this year or have to bring a dish to someone's house, I highly recommend this.  It is easy, healthy and kinda hard to screw up!
Perfect amount of healthy carbs, fat and protein :)

Ham, Gruyere & Spinach Bread Pudding
This elegant dish is simple to prepare. High-quality smoked ham complements the
spinach, peppers, rosemary and Gruyere perfectly. To make this recipe ahead, prepare
the pudding through Step 3 and then refrigerate overnight. Let stand at room
temperature while the oven preheats, and bake as directed in Step 4.

Serves: 6
Preparation time: 30 minutes

IngredientsFor the custard:
4 large egg whites
4 large eggs
1 cup skim milk
2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
1 teaspoon minced fresh rosemary

For the bread and filling:
4 cups (4-6 slices) whole-grain bread, cut into 1-inch cubes
5 cups chopped spinach, wilted
1/2 cup chopped jarred roasted red peppers
1 cup (5 ounces) diced ham steak

For the topping:
3/4 cup shredded Gruyere cheese

Preparation1. Preheat oven to 375°F. Coat an 11” x 7” glass baking dish or a 2-quart
 casserole with cooking spray.

2. To prepare the custard, whisk egg whites, eggs and milk in a medium bowl.
Add mustard, pepper and rosemary and whisk to combine.

3. Toss bread, spinach, roasted red peppers and ham in a large bowl. Add the custard
and toss well to coat. Transfer to the prepared baking dish and push down to compact.
 Cover with foil.

4. Bake until the custard has set, 40-45 minutes. Uncover, sprinkle with cheese and
continue baking until the pudding is puffed and golden on top, 15-20 minutes more.
Transfer to a wire rack and cool for 15-20 minutes before serving.

Enjoy!

BAWS Yoga schedule is taking a savasana (for now)

Hey There!

Meghan, the Yoga Instructor, is leaving BAWS (she will still be teaching every Sunday at 12pm until May 29th).  I wish her well and thank her for her time and dedication :)

I am in the midst of hiring a new Yogi and am completely excited to welcome her/him into the mix!  I ask if you could please be patient with the yoga schedule as there will not be any classes held at this time.  I will let you know ASAP when we have the new instructor.

*Please be aware... all other classes are still running the same days and times and will continue to do so!

Thank you for understanding!

Colon Love

Hi!  Welcome readers ;)

So, at the last Food Rules Challenge session, the Food Rulers had the pleasure to hear all about the colon and how it works (lucky them).  I think it is super important to understand how your body works because the more you treat it well, the longer you will stay happy and healthy.  The older I get, the more I am focusing on taking care of my inside pipes and not just my physique.  I want to reiterate one more time how food affects the colon and our digestion.
We have 26ft of intestines folded like an accordion inside our stomach... weird huh?!  If we don't follow a healthy nutrition plan and drink tons of water, we will be so backed up from all the toxic foods to the point that our bodies will hold 7-10 extra pounds of tar and debris in our colon!  Ew!  We can blame that on the toxic buildup, preservatives and grease of all that McDonald's.  But...  They are not the only ones to blame... at the end of the day, it is YOUR hand putting that nutrition-less burger into your mouth.
Let's think next time we fuel our bodies.
The best thing is to eat tons of fibrous complex carbohydrates (veggies and fruit), lean protein, healthy oils, and lots of agua ... your colon will be one giant slip-n-slide.  After all, we want to be as clean as a whistle.

My food for the day that will keep my colon smiling and my energy up...

First, 12 oz of water

6 oz greek yogurt, 1/2 banana, 2/3 cup granola, 1 tbsp chia seeds (after my workout)

Sauteed Veggies and 3 tbsp black bean hummus (unpictured)

Mini sweet pepper stuffed with fresh salmon salad

Honey crisp apple (nature's candy!) and 1/4 cup pecans

Tonight I will have grilled chicken with heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, basil and balsamic

There you have it.  A great day for my colon... what are you feeding yours?
